The public sector is experiencing a massive transformation with the advent of Artificial Intelligence. From improving government processes to providing better public services, AI is changing the way the public sector operates. This development also affects the way consular services are carried out. Here are 4 potential use cases that can be beneficial:

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธLanguage Identification: Latvia and Germany have been testing automatic speech recognition to identify language knowledge and language type, which helps accelerate administrative processes.

๐Ÿ•ต๏ธIdentity Fraud Detection: The Netherlands, Finland, and Lithuania have been using facial recognition and document recognition to ensure the veracity of visa documentation and establish the identity of foreign nationals. Few countries test this technology to tackle cases of human trafficking.

๐Ÿ’ปCase Management: Finland has been testing a machine learning-based case management system that allows consular staff to assess the complexity of an individual case and estimate the associated costs.

๐Ÿค—Client Interaction: Virtual assistants become more widespread across all European consulates and embassies. They guide users to the right information and provide information on the Office of Citizenship services.

So, the future will just shine bright upon us? Not really. The advancements in AI need to address justified concerns about data protection, transparent decision-making and hidden biases. Only then will the full potential of AI in consular services be unleashed.
